Everything You Need to Know About eFoiling at Lake Tahoe

Welcome to the definitive resource for electric hydrofoiling in the High Sierra.
Whether you're a first-time flyer looking to book a lesson, a vacationer seeking a multi-day rental for your lakefront home, or a local looking to purchase and service your own Fliteboard, we have you covered.

Getting Started

What exactly is eFoiling and how does it work?

eFoiling (also called electric foiling or hydrofoil surfing) is riding a battery-powered electric surfboard equipped with a hydrofoil wing. Using a Bluetooth handheld controller, you control the speed of the electric motor. Once enough speed is reached, the hydrofoil creates lift—just like an airplane wing, raising the board fully out of the water. The result is a silent, ultra-smooth ride above the surface, often described as "flying on a magic carpet".

What does it feel like to ride an eFoil?

Riding an eFoil feels smooth, weightless, and incredibly fluid. Once the board rises above the water on its hydrofoil, surface chop and drag disappear completely. The ride is nearly silent, with only the wind and water beneath you. Many riders compare the sensation to flying, floating, or gliding on air, making eFoiling one of the most unique and memorable watersports experiences available.

I have no board sports experience. Is it hard to learn?

No board sports background is required to learn eFoiling. Many beginners find it easier than surfing or snowboarding because speed and lift are controlled electronically, not by waves or gravity. With our stable, high-volume boards and proven teaching method (start on your stomach → knees → standing), 99% of first-time riders are able to stand and ride during their first lesson. The learning process is gradual and customizable, allowing each rider to progress safely and confidently.

What makes Lake Tahoe a special place to learn?

Lake Tahoe is one of the most spectacular places on earth to learn eFoiling. At 6,225 ft elevation, you experience a true "high-altitude flight" on the world's clearest alpine lake, often seeing boulders and sand 30 to 40 feet below while you glide above the surface. The water's famous turquoise color, surrounded by snow-capped Sierra Nevada peaks, creates a breathtaking backdrop unlike anywhere else. Because we're fully mobile, we can choose the best location each day based on wind and water conditions, ensuring smooth, glassy water that's perfect for beginners.

How do the radio helmets work and why are they important?

We use premium helmets equipped with BbTALKIN two-way radio communication. This allows your coach to speak directly (and calmly) into your ear in real time. You'll hear instant, precise cues like "shift your weight forward a little," or "look up", even when you're 100+ feet away and flying at full speed.
The system also supports group communication, allowing up to three riders and the instructor to stay connected at the same time, perfect for friends, couples, or families learning together. This constant, private coaching channel is the #1 reason beginners progress so fast and why our first-lesson success rate is over 99%. It's like having a professional instructor riding inside your head, keeping the learning curve gentle, social, and safe.

Lessons & Logistics

How long is the session and what is included?

The total experience lasts approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes. This includes 15–20 minutes for check-in, gearing up, and a safety briefing, followed by a full 60 minutes of ride time on the water. After your session, we allow time to come down from the adrenaline, return gear, and dry off comfortably, so you never feel rushed.

What's included:
- Latest-model Fliteboard and battery
- Premium wetsuit (seasonal)
- Helmet with radio communication
- CGA impact vest
- Professional instruction and safety briefing

What should I bring or wear?

Pack light: swimsuit, towel, sunscreen, and water bottle. We provide everything else: top-of-the-line Fliteboards, wetsuits, helmets with radio comms, and life jackets. If you have your own wetsuit, feel free to bring it. Don't forget sunglasses for after your session, the high-altitude sun is intense!

Where do we meet? Can you come to my dock?

We offer two flexible options:
- Carnelian Bay (North Lake Tahoe): Our home base is at Tahoe Waterman's Landing, a relaxed lakeside spot with restrooms, a coffee shop, and an authentic surf-shack vibe.
- We Come to You: We can meet you anywhere around Lake Tahoe. If you have a lakeside rental, private dock, or access to a suitable beach, we'll bring the boards and instructors directly to you. This is a favorite option for families and groups looking for maximum convenience.

Where is Tahoe Waterman's Landing and is parking available?

Tahoe Waterman's Landing is at 5166 North Lake Blvd, Carnelian Bay (North Shore, between Tahoe City and Kings Beach). Free parking is available in the adjacent lot. On busy summer weekends (July–August), it can fill up, but free street parking is always available along North Lake Blvd within a 2–4 minute walk. We recommend arriving 10–15 minutes early during peak season to allow time for parking and check-in.

What is the best time of day to book?

Mornings (8:00–11:00 AM) are hands-down the best: glassy calm water, almost no boat traffic, and gorgeous alpine light on the peaks. Afternoon wind (the famous "Washoe Zephyr") usually picks up after noon. That said, a little texture or small waves can be more challenging but also a lot of fun for adventurous riders who want to level up their skills.

How do I book an eFoil lesson?

Booking is easy! You can reserve your session online through our website, call us directly, or message us via text or WhatsApp. During summer, we recommend booking 2–3 days in advance. In shoulder seasons (May–June and September–October), 24–48 hours is usually sufficient. Last-minute availability is sometimes possible. Just reach out and we'll do our best to fit you in.

Do you offer photos or videos of the experience?

Absolutely! We know you'll want proof you flew. Every instructor carries a GoPro, and we offer optional drone footage. You'll find media packages available as an add-on when booking, so we can plan ahead to capture your first-flight moment. These make amazing keepsakes and even better social media content!

Groups, Families & Events

Is eFoiling suitable for families and kids?

Yes! eFoiling is one of the best family watersport activities at Lake Tahoe. We welcome kids as young as 12 years old (sometimes younger if they're confident in the water). We have smaller boards and can electronically limit speed and power for lighter or younger riders, making it completely safe and controllable.
Parents tell us that watching their child take off and fly for the first time is one of their all-time favorite parenting moments. The whole family can learn together, cheer each other on via the radio helmets, and create unforgettable shared memories.

Can we book a group session or private party?

Definitely! We specialize in private group experiences: bachelor/bachelorette parties, corporate team-building, family reunions, birthday celebrations, you name it. With one of the largest Fliteboard fleets on the West Coast, we can host groups of nearly any size. Everyone learns together, rotates riding time, and stays connected through our group radio helmets. It's an unbeatable bonding experience on the water.

Contact us with your group size and date, and we'll design a custom package.

Is there a weight limit for eFoiling?

Almost everyone can ride! Our fleet includes high-volume boards (120L+) that comfortably handle riders up to 250–260 lbs (115–120 kg). Heavier riders may just need a slightly longer runway to get up on foil, but once flying, weight becomes irrelevant.

When you book, simply let us know everyone's approximate height and weight so we can match the perfect board and wing setup. Proper equipment matching is the key to your first-flight success.

Single Day & Multi-Day Rentals

Do you offer multi-day rentals for my vacation?

Yes! If you're staying at a lakefront home or a property with water access, we offer custom multi-day rental packages tailored to your needs. You can choose how many boards, batteries, chargers, and extras you want, and we'll drop everything off directly at your location. This allows you to ride at sunrise, sunset, or whenever conditions are perfect, without scheduling a lesson every time.

It's the ultimate Lake Tahoe vacation upgrade, giving you the freedom to fly at your own pace in private, stunning settings. Many guests say having eFoils at their dock for the week is the single best part of their Tahoe vacation.

Can I rent an eFoil for just a few hours or a single day?

Absolutely! Our rentals are flexible, whether you want a half-day, full-day, or multi-day package. Single-day rentals are perfect for:
- Practicing after your lesson
- Experienced riders visiting Lake Tahoe
- A spontaneous adventure on the water

All rentals come with batteries, charger, and a quick safety refresher, so you're set up for a safe and smooth ride from the start.

Is a lesson required before renting?

For safety and equipment protection, new clients must complete one introductory lesson to demonstrate basic competency. Once you're "cleared" by our instructors, you can access our rental fleet for unaccompanied riding.

If you've taken lessons elsewhere or already own your board, we may waive this requirement after a brief water assessment. This ensures everyone has the skills to enjoy eFoiling safely and confidently.

What is included in a multi-day rental?

Everything is 100% custom, but a typical vacation package includes:
- Your choice of Fliteboard models & sizes
- Batteries + charger
- Full wing/mast setup and wireless controller
- Wetsuit, impact vest, helmet
- Delivery & pickup at your dock/home (available)
- Full orientation on battery swapping and safe charging
- Text/call support for questions during your rental

We'll make sure you have everything you need for independent, worry-free riding, so you can focus on flying over the lake and enjoying your vacation.

Buying Your Own eFoil

Can I buy a Fliteboard from you?

Yes! As an Authorized Fliteboard Reseller in Lake Tahoe, we make owning your own eFoil simple and hassle-free. We don't maintain a massive on-site inventory (to keep things fresh and focused on lessons/rentals), but we always check our current stock for popular models like the Fliteboard PRO. If it's not in stock, we can order directly from Fliteboard for quick delivery, often within 1–2 weeks.
Skip the DIY shipping headaches. We handle unboxing, assembly, and setup so you can hit the water flying right away.

Why should I buy from eFoil Tahoe instead of online?

Buying local comes with major advantages:
- Try Before You Buy: Demo the board on the water first. If you decide to purchase, we often credit part of your lesson/demo fee toward the purchase price.
- White-Glove Setup: We assemble the board, pair the controller, update firmware, and walk you through maintenance protocols so you're ready to ride immediately.
- Local Warranty & Service Support: As a Fliteboard Service Certified dealer, we can handle troubleshooting, repairs, firmware updates, and tuning locally. You won't be stuck emailing generic support, your board stays in expert hands year-round.
- Shipping Savings Bonus: We frequently group local orders to reduce shipping costs—another perk for our Lake Tahoe clients.

Which Fliteboard is right for me?

Choosing the right Fliteboard depends on your experience, size, riding style, and goals:
For beginners:
- Fliteboard (100L): A stable, versatile option that makes getting up and flying easier while still allowing room to progress
- Larger boards or inflatable models: Extra surface area provides stability and durability, ideal for first-time riders or families

For intermediate and advanced riders:
- Fliteboard PRO (67L): Smaller and more agile, perfect for carving, waves, or sportier riding
- Fliteboard (standard): Balanced for stability and maneuverability, suitable for most conditions

We also offer a free consultation to help match mast length, wing size, and battery type to your weight, experience, and Lake Tahoe conditions.
Try our Fliteboard's Wing Selector tool to find your perfect eFoil setup.

Safety & Policies

Is eFoiling safe?

Yes! eFoiling is one of the safest powered watersports when done with proper training and gear. You control your speed 100% with the handheld trigger (let go = instant motor stop), there's no propeller near your body, and you're wearing a helmet, impact vest, and receiving live radio coaching.

Statistically, you're far more likely to end the session with sore cheeks from smiling than any injury. That said, falls happen (especially while learning), so we treat safety seriously and never compromise on instruction or equipment.

Do I need to know how to swim?

Yes, you should be comfortable in deep water and able to swim a short distance. We provide CGA impact vests that keep you afloat effortlessly, but basic water confidence is required for your safety and enjoyment.

What happens if I fall off?

Falling is part of learning, and it's completely normal! The motor cuts off instantly when you release the trigger. You'll splash safely into the water wearing your buoyant impact vest, and your board floats nearby. Your instructor will guide you back on the board via radio helmet.
Most students fall dozens of times in their first session, it's part of the fun and the learning process. By the end of the hour, you'll be falling less and flying more!

How fast can an eFoil go, and will I control the speed as a beginner?

Fliteboards can reach 25+ mph in expert hands, but as a beginner, you're in complete control. The handheld remote is pressure-sensitive like a throttle, and you can press "+" to gradually increase your max speed setting. We start beginners at walking speed (5–8 mph) and increase gradually as you gain confidence.
We can also electronically limit max speed for kids or nervous riders. You'll never go faster than you choose.

Is the water cold? Do I need a wetsuit?

Lake Tahoe water varies by season:
- Summer (July–September): 65–68°F—many riders still prefer a wetsuit to stay comfortable for the full session.
- Spring/Fall (May–June, October): 55–60°F—wetsuit recommended.

We provide high-quality wetsuits at no extra charge, and the high-altitude sun warms you quickly once you’re flying above the water.

What if the weather is bad?

Your safety and enjoyment come first. If conditions are windy, choppy, or unsafe (whitecaps, storms, lightning), we'll contact you as soon as we see it coming and reschedule at no cost. Full refund or credit, your choice.
We monitor forecasts obsessively so you never waste a trip. Lake Tahoe weather can change quickly, and we'd rather reschedule than have you experience the lake on a rough day.

What is your cancellation policy?

- 48+ hours notice: 100% refund
- Within 48 hours: Rescheduling credit or 50% fee (we've already reserved instructor + gear)
- We cancel for weather: Always 100% refund or credit

Life happens, just let us know as early as possible and we'll work with you!
